Help our FHS band and guard students survive band camp!
Our students are essentially athletes who practice outdoors under blazing heat conditions that expose them to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and sunstroke. To assist with keeping these formation rehearsals more productive, our directors are seeking two parent chaperones to care and render any first aid for students that may be unwell.
Your job will be to watch for signs of heat fatigue and dehydration. Some of the symptoms to look for include nausea, muscle cramping, headache, and lack of concentration. After checking with the directors, treatment involves moving the student to a cool shady area, applying cool and wet towels to neck, wrists, and underarms, loosening clothing, and drinking more water. If there are symptoms of stomach or leg cramping, massage the areas of cramp will help alleviate the discomfort. Before letting the student return to rehearsal, make sure sunscreen is reapplied.
WHAT TO BRING:
* Lawn chair(s), set up in the shady area near the directors' tower
* A cooler filled with ice and water bottles (some small ziplock baggies as ice packs)
* Saltine crackers or granola bars ready if needed
* A trash bag
Please sign up for the entire block if you are available, but we are also thankful if you can only volunteer for a portion of the time. The start and end times are recommendations. Don't fret if you arrive late or need to leave early. Any amount of your time is very much appreciated!
Please email volunteers@friscobandboosters.com if you have any additional questions. Thank you for keeping our students healthy and safe!
P.S. Feel free to bring a camera and take some pictures! We'll show you how to share them on the Boosters SmugMug https://friscoband.smugmug.com/. Thanks!
