This role is about standing outside (or just inside) the main entrance at a major retailer holding a donation box filled with poppies between October 27 - November 10. Customers will naturally deposit their donations and take poppies.
Upon signing up, we'll confirm your shift and relevant details with you. Prior to your shift, please go to the Preston Legion (Lower Level) at 334 Westminster Dr N, Cambridge, ON to retrieve your Poppy Box and return it to the same location immediately following your shift.
FAQs
1. How Much Do Poppies Cost? Poppies are free - no donation required. Should people want to donate, it's highly appreciated with the proceeds going toward supporting veterans and their families.
2. How Do I Get My Volunteer Sheet Signed? Please bring your volunteer hours sheet with you to be signed upon return of your Poppy Donation Box.
3. What Should I Wear? You don't need to dress-up - use your judgment to ensure you represent the Royal Canadian Legion and the Poppy with dignity and respect. You will also be provided a 'volunteer' badge for use. If you are a Cadet or part of another group, you are permitted to wear that attire.
4. Can I Choose My Location? You can certainly let us know which of the following retailers you would prefer to be stationed at: Kitchener Costco, Zehrs Cambridge Centre, Preston No Frills, Preston Beer Store, Preston LCBO, and the Dunbar Road LCBO.
5. Can I Sit Down? Volunteers should stand in an appropriate space near the main entrance, holding the poppy box, and assisting individuals with obtaining a poppy and depositing their donation. Cambridge Centre is the only location with available seating.
6. How Do People Donate? Donations will be made for the most part via cash and deposited into your Poppy Box, but donations can also be made electronically by e-transferring to poppy@prestonlegion.ca. If you're stationed at Costco or Cambridge Centre, you may be using a new 'Tap Box' that accepts debit/credit and you will be shown how to use this.
