UF/IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station G Street Living Shoreline Volunteer Days signup sheet

Deactivated

This signup sheet is not accepting new volunteers.
Please contact the event coordinator for further details.

Come help build a living shoreline! Living shorelines use natural elements such as marsh grasses and oysters to reduce or reverse coastal erosion. After months of nursery work, marsh transplants, oyster sill constructions, and oyster relays we are in the construction phase of turning Cedar Key’s G Street shoreline into a living shoreline! Volunteers can expect to mostly help with transplanting marsh plants from donor sites and nursery-grown stock, but other restoration tasks may also be assigned. We have several dates and times available – check Facebook often for updates. To participate, you must REGISTER on this signup sheet and agree in writing to the public safety guidelines below.

Safety guidelines:
UF/IFAS is now allowing volunteer work that occurs outdoors to resume in a limited capacity. We ask that each of you read the following, and ensure you are prepared to follow these rules at all times during your volunteer activity. We will ask you to confirm your agreement with these guidelines by email in advance of your volunteer shift.
1. We are limiting the number of slots so that no more than ten people, including NCBS staff, will be on site at any one time and advance registration/sign-up is REQUIRED.
2. Those who are volunteering MUST:
a. Travel in separate vehicles to the site (unless you live in the same household)
b. Maintain the 6 feet distance asked by the CDC
c. Wear a mask if you are working within 10 feet of other people who are not members of your household
d. Work with your assigned set of gear, and do not share gear or touch other gear not assigned to you unless it is sanitized in between
3. If at any time it is apparent that a volunteer is not following the protocols outlined here, we reserve the right to excuse that volunteer from the remainder of the shift. These guidelines are in place to protect others as well as ourselves and MUST be respected at all times.
4. All volunteers should be aware of the Governor’s executive order 20-112, section 2, part B “…senior citizens and individuals with a significant underlying medical condition (such as chronic lung disease, moderate-to-severe asthma, serious heart conditions, immunocompromised status, cancer, diabetes, severe obesity, renal failure and liver disease) are strongly encouraged to stay at home and take all measures to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19.” We ask that you fully consider these guidelines before participating in any of our citizen science projects at this time, and please feel free to let us know you are not available for volunteer activities.

What to expect: Please meet at the Nature Coast Biological Station for all events. Each event will last roughly three hours. Each day there will be two, three-hour shifts: 8:30 AM-11:30 AM and 3:00 PM-6:00 PM. We are limiting each shift to 8 volunteers. Volunteers will be participating in a range of restoration tasks, but all of them involve the potential to get muddy or dirty, so come prepared! Some of the days may also require a little bit of heavy lifting and walking on muddy and uneven terrain. Any youth volunteers must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring/wear: Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes. We recommend that you bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, work gloves, water, and snacks. Please wear shoes and clothes that can get dirty and you may wish to bring a change of clothes for your comfort. Please also bring a mask or other face covering and your own water and food. We cannot safely provide a common source of water and snacks. It is imperative that you bring enough water with you! We recommend at least 24-36 oz per person for a 3-hour shift.

NOTE: Activities are tentative and subject to change due to weather, tides, and material availability. We will confirm at least two days in advance via email.
We hope you can join us once again to take part in Cedar Key’s shoreline restoration!
