Below are opportunities to assist with land management projects at Cedar Creek in summer 2024. You may sign up for one or several! You will receive an email with additional details and reminders of timing and what to bring in advance of each event.
Clean up Eco-Trash. After more than 80 years of research, Cedar Creek’s landscapes have accumulated what we like to call ‘eco-trash’ - the remnants of long-abandoned experiments that are no longer maintained or valuable. Volunteers will help Cedar Creek staff address these areas and remove old research material and infrastructure. This may include tasks like removing fencing, pulling rebar and conduit, picking up buckets or flagging, hauling materials to our trash and recycling areas, etc. Your crew lead will help you determine what to remove and what if anything should stay, so no expertise needed - just a willingness to work and the ability to bend and lift.
Repair fencing. Help Cedar Creek maintain our many miles of perimeter fencing! Volunteers with work under the supervisor of buildings and grounds staff to repair and straighten our 4-foot welded wire fence. Work will include pounding t-posts, attaching fencing to posts, removing damaged fencing, hauling materials, etc. No experience necessary, but come prepared to work hard and get sweaty!
Trail and Teaching Site Prep. We recently demolished an old cabin and are working to convert the area where it was into an outdoor teaching space. As a first step in this process, volunteers will help clear and establish a short (~⅓ mile) trail to the site, clear brush and downed trees, haul debris to the burn pile, and help make a path from the site down to the bank of Cedar Creek. No expertise needed, but come prepared to lift, carry, chop and work hard.
What to bring: water bottle, lunch/snacks, sturdy shoes, work gloves (can also borrow), weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty. We will provide all needed tools and equipment.
