Scroll down to volunteer
September 19th, 20th, 21st, and 23rd, 2023: Every other year, since 2009, the City of Durango performs counts of bicyclists and pedestrians.
Having accurate data helps the City of Durango to know how infrastructure is being used; and it is necessary to secure grant funding for projects such as, sidewalk repair, bicycle facilities, and transit system improvements.
To conserve costs and encourage citizen participation, volunteers are recruited to conduct the counting. With four days of counting at 11 different locations, there is a total of 77 slots that need to be filled by volunteers and staff.
***Your name will be entered into a drawing to WIN two round trip tickets to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for each time slot you sign up for! The more you sign up, the higher chance you have for winning. We would like to thank volunteers by offering this fantastic opportunity to ride the train.*** Drawing will take place Sept. 25, 2023. Follow us on Facebook at Get Around Durango for announcements.
Instructions:
1. Sign up for an date, time, and intersection.
2. One week before your count date, the city will email you a tally sheet to help you keep track of the number of bicyclists and pedestrians.
3. Go to the intersection with a chair, hammock, or find a bench and get comfortable for two hours.
4. One tally for each bicyclist/pedestrian that crosses through the intersection.
5. Turn in your numbers to the city (link will be emailed).
6. Feel good about supporting active transportation and providing real data!
