Water Safety Ambassadors are friendly community resources on location at popular swim locations. Ambassadors monitor water quality, help steward the swimming site, and are able to be the help before help arrives in case of an emergency.
Water Safety Ambassadors are volunteer community members stationed at popular swim locations to distribute properly fitting lifejackets, provide water safety tips, gather basic water quality data, and facilitate beach cleanups. They are trained in Lifeguarding, First Aid CPR, lifejacket fitting, and citizen science, and serve on location at popular swim locations as friendly community resources to distribute lifejackets and share basic water safety information for that location on that day (temperatures, currents, known hazards, water quality considerations, etc).
What you will do: (1) Take water temperature readings; (2) conduct tests for algae, bacteria, agro-industrial chemicals, and microplastics; (3) fit people with lifejackets and safety whistles; (4) conduct site safety assessments and talk to people about water safety; (5) facilitate beach cleanups and talk to people about water stewardship; (6) serve as a water watcher; (7) provide pop-up swim lessons in a defined rope and buoy shallow water “river pool”
What you get: Red Cross certification in Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED and/or Lifeguarding & Waterfront Skills, WaterStrong t-shirt, swim cap, light snacks, gift cards of appreciation, Metro parking pass for day use, indelible feeling of connection and joy with the water and our communities
Who can volunteer: anyone age 12+
Stations:
1. Outreach tent & lifejacket distribution (1 - 2 volunteers)
2. Pop up community swim, in-water instructors (2 - 3 volunteers)
3. Citizen scientist (1 - 2 volunteers)
4. Beach cleanup (1 - 2 volunteers)
