9th Annual Afrofuturism Lounge Volunteer Signup Sheet

The Afrofuturism Lounge is an immersive cultural experience and community gathering that uses Afrofuturism as a lens to imagine, design, and build more equitable futures. Produced by Grioneers, Inc. under the leadership of Dr. LaWana Richmond, it brings together artists, writers, scholars, technologists, entrepreneurs, educators, and fans to celebrate Black creativity while exploring the intersection of culture, science, technology, history, and social innovation.

Rather than being only a convention panel or art show, the Lounge functions as a living laboratory for future-making.

Its core elements typically include:

Black speculative fiction, comics, animation, and film
Artist and author showcases
Interactive discussions and presentations
Fashion, cosplay, and wearable art
Technology demonstrations and innovation
Music and multimedia experiences
Vendors featuring Black-owned businesses
Community networking and collaboration
Opportunities for attendees to imagine and co-create future possibilities

The Lounge is intentionally designed to be welcoming to both lifelong Afrofuturists and people discovering the movement for the first time.

The philosophy behind the Lounge

The Afrofuturism Lounge is grounded in the idea that imagining better futures is a practical act. It draws on principles such as:

Sankofa — learning from the past to shape the future.
Ubuntu — recognizing our shared humanity and collective flourishing.
Nommo — honoring the power of words and stories to create reality.

Participants are encouraged not only to consume art, but also to envision new systems, relationships, technologies, businesses, and communities that advance justice, creativity, and collective thriving.

What makes it unique

Unlike many pop-culture events, the Afrofuturism Lounge intentionally bridges entertainment and civic imagination. A visitor might:

Meet a comic book creator alongside an engineer.
Hear a filmmaker discuss social change through speculative storytelling.
Experience Afrofuturist fashion as wearable worldbuilding.
Connect with entrepreneurs, educators, and community leaders designing real-world futures inspired by speculative imagination.

The result is an experience that moves fluidly between celebration, education, networking, and innovation.

Today

The Lounge has grown from its early beginnings into an annual feature associated with major events such as San Diego Comic-Con and has expanded to other conventions, including BayCon, helping connect Black speculative artists and communities across California.
