Play on the Plaza is a monthly event that takes place on the second Saturday of each month between April to October. We are always in need of friendly community members who would like to volunteer to help us make this event as successful as possible! Thank you so much for donating your precious time to help build the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District!
Volunteer Roles/Descriptions:
Gate Ambassador
- Wear your favorite gear to represent the community!
- Must be warm and engaging! This is often the first contact for patrons entering Play on the Plaza!
- Collect donations in our donation buckets (all donations go toward the operation of Play on the Plaza)
- If vehicles must enter the street because they live on the block, one person must walk with the vehicle to their garage to ensure safety of our patrons wandering the street!
- Redirect vehicles who do not live on the block and notify that the street is closed until 6 pm that evening.
Ambassador – Floater
- Wander throughout Play on the Plaza welcoming folx and being a bright and friendly face that folx can interact with.
- Share information about Play on the Plaza and the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District (pick up a palm card from the Outreach booth as this has basic information about the District to share!)
- Step in as back-up if a gate ambassador does not show up for a shift.
- Help the coordinators of Play on the Plaza with extra support if needed.
Ambassador – Residential Traffic Director
- You are posted in front of the residential building that houses families on the block of Play on the Plaza. When families leave the build greet them with smiles and gently encourage them to leave the block through Isis or heading toward Folsom so that they can avoid the active play area.
- This position is to help build a positive and respectful relationship with the tenants that live on our block and who might not be aware of what Play on the Plaza or the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District is.
Gear Swap Helper
- Assist our main point person (David Hyman) with coordinating sales, consignments and assistance with the Gear Swap
- Handles money (You will be trained by David – this position is good for someone who intends to volunteer on-going at the Gear Swap booth as it does require training).
- interacting with costumers - assisting them with selecting and trying on items
Outreach Booth
- Warmly greet patrons who come to the booth
- Shares information about the District and Play on the Plaza (palm cards available at the booth that lists what the District does!)
- Encourage folx to join our newsletter as a means to know what is happening in the District!
- Build positive relationships with community members
- Sell bandanas/pins (Training provided by either Cal or Reika)
We ask all our volunteers to please report to the Outreach Booth 15 minutes prior to the beginning of your shift to check in and for any additional instructions. You will report to either Cal (District Manager) or Reika (Program Associate/Board Member). Gate Ambassadors primary contact person is Pup Loadz. And to please report back to the Outreach Booth at the end of your shift for a quick debrief and check in!
We will send you email reminders as we get closer to July 13th!
Thank you so much for volunteering to help us at Play on the Plaza! We can’t wait to see you there!!
