School Street Volunteer Shift Information:
Our School Street operates on Comox Street between Cardero Street and Bidwell Street at drop off and pickup times on school days. Motorists are not permitted to drive into or out of the School Street while it is operating.
Two volunteers are scheduled for each School Street shift. The School Street volunteers unlock and set up the barriers at the Cardero and Bidwell end of the School Street. The gap between the sawhorse barriers and orange cones needs to be narrow enough to stop people from driving cars in, but wide enough that cargo bikes can still get through.
There are two sand bags at each end of the street to weigh down the sawhorse barriers to ensure that the wind does not move the barriers and to provide an additional visual cue to motorists not to enter the School Street.
There is a storage box in the Lord Roberts Elementary School office containing high-visibility safety vests and spare equipment.
With some exceptions for early pickup, the School Street shifts are as follows:
Drop Off: 8:35 am unlock barriers and put on high-visibility vests, 8.40 position barriers at each end of the School Street, 9.10 am remove and lock up barriers.
Pickup First Shift: 2.35 pm unlock barriers and put on high-visibility vests, 2.40 pm position barriers at each end of the School Street, 3.00 pm hand over to Second Shift volunteer.
Pickup Second Shift: 3.00 pm relieve Pickup First Shift Volunteers, 3.30 pm remove and lock up barriers.
Lock combination will be provided by School Street Coordinator after you sign up for a shift.
Please wear appropriate outdoor gear for the forecast weather.
