We are extremely pleased the City has awarded us a Community Cleanup for Sat, Sept 16, 9AM - 2PM. This event takes place at WHMCA's parking lot, is open to everyone and is free. It enables Calgarians to dispose of large items such as furniture & mattresses (up to 6'), technology equipment, tires, batteries, bottles, cans and metals. Clothing and gently used household items can be donated to the Calgary Drop-in. The event's original coordinator, Ben McKenzie, is back at the helm.
Each year, we find this event is a great mixer for volunteers in addition to being much appreciated for the community at large.
This year, we are looking for 26 people to take a 3-hour shift. This includes a 3-person team for each shift to pick up items directly from a small number of WHMCA member households with elderly, disabled or otherwise overwhelmed residents who cannot get their goods to the community centre.
Unloaders need to be able to lift. Traffic controllers need to be able to be on your feet but no lifting is necessary. If you are someone with a truck and could donate the use of it and your time to be part of the 3-person team to pick up items offsite, you do not need to lift.
There will be snacks throughout the day and a hot lunch served for volunteers and vendors. If you have questions, be in touch with Suzanne at volunteers@wintonheights.ca.
