2nd & 2nd Unsheltered Movie Night (Wed, Jan 11th PM to Thu, Jan 12th AM) signup sheet

We are so grateful to the First United Methodist Church (203 S. 200 E., SLC) for continuing to offer their welcoming space for our unsheltered neighbors to stay warm and watch movies during extremely cold nights. Our volunteers are paramount to this work! See job descriptions below to select the best fit and timing for you, then sign up below.

DONATIONS: Thank you for your donations in the past! Due to limited storage at the church, we currently we can only accept donations of: socks, gloves, underwear (men's size M & L, women's size 5/6/7). We purchase food and supplies each night as needed with your cash donations, which you can give through Venmo (@Unsheltered-Utah) or PayPal (@UnshelteredUtah). You can still drop in-kind donations (medical, hygiene, tents, fuel, snacks, drinks, etc.) at the following drop locations:

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Leads:
Please do not sign up for these slots unless you have been trained to do so. You can look to these leads for training and support.

Transportation Team (7:30pm-10pm, 10pm-12am & 6-8am)
This team will use their personal vehicles to pick up and transport our unsheltered friends to the church. A great job for someone who’s got experience with the unsheltered community and is comfortable being alone with them. While the vast majority of our unsheltered friends are gentle and kind, there are occasional mental health issues that can feel uncomfortable. If you are newer to the work, feel free to bring a friend to ride with you to help you build confidence. Since this may be the only time our guests have a 1:1 conversation with a staff member, it’s an excellent opportunity to assess needs, monitor for health issues and bring them to our attention upon arrival. Training in the use of Naloxone strongly encouraged.

Setup/Cleanup Team (7:30-10pm, 6-8am, & 8-9am):
This team helps set up and clean up the spaces, including moving furniture, putting up signs, receiving donations, distributing mats and blankets, cleaning floors and bathrooms in the morning, and helping organize and store supplies.

Safety & Health Team (shifts throughout the night and morning from 7:30am to 9am):
This is an important team where we prefer experienced volunteers, but we can also train as needed. The safety team helps patrol the parking lot and church, greets people at the door, and helps them get down to the basement via the elevator. Others in the team then do check in, bag checks, search for metal objects with a security wand, and go through pockets to ensure the church is a safe environment for all. We require at least 3 safety people on staff at all times, and interactions with guests are largely respectful and polite. We do occasionally have times when there are more guests than we can accommodate, or a guest is having a mental health issue, so skills in de-escalation and the ability to stay calm are extremely important. First aid skills are also a plus on this team as some of our guests arrive with wounds, frostbite, or other conditions that require basic first aid and/or assessment of more serious conditions to help determine next steps. If you have those skills, please let us know!

Hospitality Team (7:30-10pm, 10pm-12am, 4-6am, & 6-8am):
This team helps make sure our unsheltered friends are comfortable and safe by feeding them snacks and coffee/hot cocoa from the kitchen until 11pm and beginning around 5 am. This team also helps monitor the two movie rooms and restrooms throughout the night. In the evening and morning the team will assist with preparing and serving dinner and grab-and-go breakfasts.
