Therefore, please be warned LOVE LETTERS contains profanity and prejudices, references to alcoholism, hospitalization, sex, suicide/death, and mentions of sexual assault. This in no way reflects the writers’ or actors’ opinions, but it is simply a reflection of the characters and the time in which they lived.

Please report no later than 6:45 p.m. for evening performances, and 1:15 p.m. for afternoon matinees.

Ushers simply hand patrons a show Playbill (program). Seating is General Seating. No need to show patrons to their seats. Concessions are already purchased, you simply set everything up on the counter in the lobby. Concessions does involve serving glasses of wine. (Must be 21+). Tickets for the 50/50 drawing are $1 each or six for $5. A winner is drawn at intermission and the winner keeps half the amount collected. The other half goes to BSA.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years — where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war, Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics, and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually, she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them.

A unique and imaginative piece of theatre comprised of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways but continued to share confidences. As the actors read the letters aloud, what is created is an evocative, touching, frequently funny but always telling pair of character studies in which what is implied is as revealing and meaningful as what is actually written down.

Performances will be held in the Hirt Theater at Bellevue Society for the Arts, 205 Maple St., Bellevue, OH 44811.

Gilbert’s Place, Bellevue, will be on-hand at performances with hot and iced coffees and a variety of specialty desserts available for purchase. The Candy Depot will also be there with some special chocolates and fine candies available for purchase.
